36) Mise-en-scene Ideas (UPDATE)

This is the final mise-en-scene ideas as we changed the original idea that we had. This is the new mise-en-scene ideas for our new title sequence.

34) Rough Storyboard for title seqeunce

This is a rough storyboard of our title sequence. This is what we had in mind for our title sequence so we planned it out so that on filming day, we can just follow it. Also when it comes to editing, we will know where to place our titles.

33) Branding the blog

We decided to go for white colour titles. This is because it stands out from everything out. The background colours are dark and gloomy so adding white attracts the attention. This goes well with our chosen genre which is Thriller.

31) FINAL IDEA FOR TITLE SEQUENCE

We decided to change the title sequence as it was hard to find a location, however we did keep the main object (the diary) involved. We decided to change the location as out main focus was the actual diary and not the location. So for our new title sequence, we decided to keep it simple and easier to film in any location. In our sequence, there is a man who has pictures of the 3 of us in his diary. Everyones face is crossed out apart from George's. George notices that he is being followed one day and decides to find out who it is. The man is writing in his diary when he suddenly gets a phone call, and walks away leaving his diary. George finds the diary and looks at it. The man remembers he left his diary and approaches the bench where he had left it. He sees George reading the book so he chases George.

This is our final storyboard of the title sequence. However, some of the scenes drawn in the storyboard have not been used in the making of this title sequence.

30) Planning Mise-En-Scene Ideas - Planning Costume Ideas

TASK 1:

1) Mean girls: (Regina George)

Regina George from 'Mean Girls' wears clothes that are in fashion and compliment her body figure. She also has the 'look' that all the girls want and all the girls are jealous of. She likes being the centre of attention. She wear more makeup than most girls do. Not only did this show that she was on a higher platform that other girls, but it also showed her wealth.

2) Spiderman: (Peter Parker)

Peter Parker carries all the features of a typical American nerd in almost all American movies. They usually wear glasses, shirts, smart trousers, suspenders, backpacks, books and smart shoes. They are the ones that usually get picked on and is not featured as much in American movies.

3) Hunger Games: (Katniss and Peeta)
Image result for hunger games katniss and peeta outfit

Both these characters wear the same type of clothing. It is based around the colours: khaki and black. Most of what they wear is leather, for example their jackets and boots. Both of these characters also wear black shirts. By wearing these types of clothings, it tells the audience that the characters aren't bothered by what they wear but infact what they need to do.

TASK 2 + TASK 3:

So for our title sequence, I decided to dress up my friend as one of the characters in our title sequence. From this image, you can tell that this character looks like a bad guy, which was what I initially wanted to create. Everything in this image was something I already owned. To create the look of a bad guy, I simply just styled my friend in all black clothing. This consisted of a black leather jacket, black boots, black trouser, black shirt and a black bag.

Now this character also is dressed up as a post man from our title sequence. It was kind of hard looking for something that a post man would wear and something I already owned. Although it is not the exact outfit of a post man, the colours represent a post man. This look was created by wearing a red top, black trousers, black bag (containing some letters ) and black shoes.

29) Sound Design

We chose these 3 sounds for our genre which is thriller. We came up with a short story with these sounds where one of our characters on a plane and there is a sudden weather change. There is rain, thunder and lightning which then leads to the plane getting electrocuted.

28) Previous student title sequences

This is one student title sequence that I had found. The sound in this title sequence was very effective. They left the original sound but added more sounds they had found. This was very good because it made me feel like I was there and by adding in suspenseful sounds, it made me feel quite scared.

This title also created the same effect. By adding minimal sounds, it was very effective because I felt as though I was there. Foley sounds were used and this helped to create an atmosphere, that drew the audience into the scenes and the detail in the scene (suspending disbelief)

I asked a couple of people and they all gave me the same response. They liked the post office idea because the genre 'thriller' was something that they were interested in. They also preferred this idea as it grabbed their attention.

23) Thinking creatively ideas

Out of the envelope we got "a post office in a tiny village" for location and a diary for a prop. On the wikipedia randomiser, we got the title "Benson and Forsyth". Our idea was for Benson to be an evil spy working at the post office, which was actually a headquarters. He allowed illegal things to be shipped off. Forsyth is a normal man working at the post office and comes across Benson's diary. Benson fears that he knows to much and tries to kill him. The film ends on a cliffhanger with Benson strangling Forsyth but we don't know the outcome.

The following camtasia video shows the steps towards formulating our idea:

practical remake

This is the shot by shot list that we used to direct us in our filming process. I had planned out the shots that were needed in filming and editing as we couldn't re-watch the original tittle sequence, my shot list/ storyboard had to be very detailed clear which I deemed was. The storyboard was very helpful to the group during filming and fulfilled it purpose.

21) The Breakfast Club REMAKE and Evaluation

https://youtu.be/F_05LeEaYwc

The whole process of recreating the breakfast club title sequence was, to be fair, quite difficult at times, for example, trying to get the accurate shot types/ angles, finding props & locations similar to the original film.

The location original title sequence was filmed at a school, so as a group we thought it was appropriate and simple to recreate the scenes to make it authentic. we found it even more difficult when it came to the editing stage (using Adobe Premiere Pro) as we had to cut down a lot of scenes, create and add in all the credits using another software (Adobe After Effects). Creating the credits was probably the most difficult and time consuming, as we wanted the credits to look like the original.

Analysing 3 Titles Sequences

Thriller

Psycho - Order of credits:

  • Director
  • Film title
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor (x2)
  • Actor (x7)
  • Actor
  • Screenplay writer
  • Director of photography

  • Editor
  • Costume supervisor
  • Make-up supervisor
  • Hairstylist
  • Special effects
  • Sound recorder
  • Assistant director
  • Pictorial consultant
  • Music by...
  • Director
Psycho does not give us any details about plot and it also does not show any camera angles. It does however use sound to its advantage to build up suspense. There are scratchy violins which create a spooky sound.

https://vimeo.com/57523069 - Memento (could not embed) - Memento is a highly dramatic title sequence. We can see a key theme in the film is repetition as many things are replayed in the title sequence. We can also tell there is going to be violence due to gunshot sounds and blood.  At the end of the title sequence, we can see he has shot someone in the head and it begins to reverse to the moment just before he pulled the trigger. The sound adds to the suspense as there are moments of calming music which is abruptly interrupted by sounds of gun fire and telephone rings. The scene changes are very quick and the editing is very jumpy. This is to further add suspense and tension. Also there is always an overlay over the picture which hints towards unclear memories and memory loss.

The cast order is as follows:
  • Film production company
  • Film production company
  • Film production company
  • Director
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Costume designer
  • Actor/actor
  • Actor/actor
  • Film title

  • Casting
  • Editor
  • Co-producer
  • Co-executive producers
  • Executive producer
  • Producers
  • Screenplay by...
  • Director

Fight Club titles sequence - Video Dailymotion - Fight Club - After the title sequence, the first thing we see is someone with a gun in their mouth. This hints at the tone of the movie and some of the characters. It does not touch on social groups or key themes. The title sequence is animated and is partnered with rock music. The first camera angle is a high angle shot on the man with the gun in his mouth showing his weakness compared to the person with the gun.

Soundscapes

Ambient sound: Background sound
Diegetic: sound visible on screen e.g water running
Non-Diegetic: sound that is put in after, during editing. not in the scene.
Score: the soundtrack to the movie
Song: music in a scene/ expression based on sound
Voiceover: person speaking/ narration
Dialogue: conversation
Foley: Sound recorded after film to create better sounds
Synchronous: existing/occurring at the same time, match movement
Asynchronous: not matching the action / Non- existing
Sound bridge: when the scene begins with the carry over sound from pervious scene
Sound motif: sound effect or combined with action

The importance of sound 15/16

Sound is noise created, it is what can be heard, which coveys different art forms.
soundscape, is sound with variety.
sound design, is creating music to create a certain tone, which is edited sounds /audio to have an emotive element.
Suspending disbelief, is sound /audio to create realism to a production. Bringing life to the visual aspects.
sound is said to be 50% of a film.

Screening 1 (without sound) Pelham 123
I felt that the film was still interesting as the scenes/shots/angle were still fast paced and the editing of the clips were sharp so the lack of sound was not missed and you were trying to keep up with the fastness of the story line.

Screening 2 (with sound )
The music co ordinated with the fast pace of the edits , I felt the opening scene was more enjoyable and entertain the watch, and the music brought life to the scenes and the music was popular which translated relatable formality which made the film more intriguing to watch.

The difference the sound made to film was the scenes moved faster with music and added more storyline. the lyrics correlated to the scene, subway sounds created more understanding to the production. The impact of the use of sound has on the enjoyment and engagement with the sequence  is its more enjoyable and watchable, makes scenes more joyful and fits to together.

Why is sound so important in film?

Sound in film is used to create atmosphere, to set the films pace or to create hidden meaning when in juxtaposition with the visuals. Sound can also be used to draw the attention of the audience on to one thing on screen. Non-diegetic sound such as music that is added in post production can be used to create suspense and tension in a scene. If a production has poor audio, for example if speech between two people is slightly out of sync with the movement of their mouths, the audience will not be focused on what is being said in the conversation, but instead focused on why it isn't synchronised.

Favourite Genres

Genre is a term used to categorise a piece of media dependent on its style, character and form.

Comedy: The reason I like comedy so much is that it often touches upon real life situations which are relatable and in hindsight funny. A comedy movie also allows you to relax as you know nothing is going to jump out at you.

Horror: When a horror movie is done well it is extremely tense and keeps you on your toes throughout the film. The adrenaline released makes you forget about your surroundings and be completely entranced by the film.

Sci-fi/Action: I like Sci-fi as it often shows the different perspectives of writers about life, terrestrial and extra-terrestrial, and what the future will look like. Sci-fi movies make you feel like you are in an alternate world and takes you far away from the cinema or sofa.

Titles: font, style and order

Order of titles in se7en:
  • Film studio
  • Production company
  • Director
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Film title
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Actor/actor
  • Actor/actor/actor
  • Actor/actor/actor
  • Actor/actor/actor
  • Casting crew
  • Music
  • Costume designer
  • Editor
  • Production designer
  • Director of photography
  • Co-producers
  • Co-executive producers
  • Executive producers
  • Writer
  • Producer
  • Director (again)
The font is important in portraying what sort of film it is and setting the tone. It can also give information about characters in the film. This is done very well in Se7en as the font used is meant to look like handwriting. We can see someone in the picture scribbling down notes in a notepad. This corresponds with the picture we are seeing and also tells us a little bit about the character.
The credits in the opening sequence in se7en are 2 minutes. This is a good amount of time as it builds suspense in the audience but is not too long so they get bored and are just waiting for the film to start.

BFI Statistics

In 2013 in the United Kingdom, the most popular film genre was animation, with the top grossing film being 'Despicable Me 2'. Animation made up a whole 21.4 percent of the box office. The genre overall made a gross of £247,000,000. In 2014, comedy topped the box office bringing in a gross box office of £198,000,000. Comedy made up 18.4% of the total box office.

2 Opening film sequences analysed

The Shining (1980) — Art of the Title: The scene is set with the extreme long shots of the car and the surrounding scene. This title sequence is simple yet effective. It has non-digetic sound such as violins, pianos and spooky vocals to add suspense and tension to the sequence. Also the camera follows the car throughout the scene suggesting and foreshadowing something will happen to the family in the car.

Skyfall (2012) — Art of the Title: Skyfall has a completely animated title sequence. It is very effective due to the deep colours being used like red and black which hints towards violence in the movie giving the audience a taste of what is to come. Also a lot of guns and fire are shown in the title sequence which further sets the tone of the film and establishes itself as an action movie.

18) shot by shot remake

Planning: The Breakfast Club

We will be filming in our school where most of the scenes we will me remarking are set, making it easier to convey. we would need to filming the cafeteria, library, hallway and of lockers, a clock and we may ned the prop of trophies.
We watched through the breakfast club and made notes of the order of the titles. We also noted the shots throughout the title sequence. Tt was easy to note the shot types and angles, it was harder to note  the shots on the story board as the process needed more details. We didn't include certain props as they didn't affect the shot of the scenes.

http://nldslab.soe.ucsc.edu/charactercreator/film_corpus/film_2012xxxx/imsdb.com/Breakfast-Club,-The.html

We filmed in the Main entrance, Reception, hallway, library-computer room, cafeteria. it was difficult to replicate certain scenes as we either didn't have the resources or the locations we did miss out certain scenes for these reason.

17) Genre shortlist

The three genre's that we may choose from our shortlist is:
- Thriller
- Drama
- Teen

16) Use of sound

Our chosen genre is Thriller. The use of sound is important as it grabs the audiences attention. It makes the audience feel as thought  they are experiencing being there in person. It drags attention away from everything else and the eyes of the audience is focused on the screen.

15) Why is sound so important in a film?

Sound is important in film because it establishes the tone and atmosphere. It also helps give the audience hints about the plot, characters or identity of the genre. George Lukas argued that 50% of the movie is sound. He said that without the sound, you have half the product of the film. Also, because of the developments in sound, there is something called the 3 dimensional visceral experience which makes the movie more enjoyable to hear as well as watch. I did an experiment where I watched a title sequence opening with and without sound. When I watched it without sound, the experience was more boring and I was not sure what the movie genre was and it was confusing because I was unsure what was exactly happening. The second time I watched it with sound, I understood what genre it was and it was more interesting. It was also more exciting and I wanted to watch it more and find out what the movie was about. Sound adds a dynamic element to the film because it makes the audience curious about what the movie is about.

14) Genre Conventions

Convention in media means the widely recognised way of doing something which is involved in the content, style and form. When looking at conventions of films, it is broken down into micro and macro elements.

Micro elements focuses on the camera, editing and the mise-en-scene. mise-en-scene is the location, props, makeup and costumes. This is effective to the film as it gives hints and clues to the audience as to what the film is about.
Macro elements focuses on the themes introduced and the characters. the theme introduced is important as it sets a tone to the film and creates an atmosphere. Characters are also important as they take part in creating the atmosphere.

13) Macro and Micro Analysis

12) Target Audience - Task 1

What is an audience?
An audience is the assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert or meeting.

How do we define target audiences?
You can define your target audience by looking at the similarities they share. For example, their jobs, hobbies, location, gender, age, common interests and common values.

Why is it useful for a film to have a target audience?
It is useful for a film to have a target audience so that it is easier to know what they are expecting. If you have a target audience, you know that they are more likely going to watch it because it is something that they are interested in. Also, by having a target audience it makes the story easier to plan.

Which audience do you think different genres appeal to? (Think about age, gender, location, profession, interests etc.)
Family movies - Older generation, children, parents
Animation - Children, teenagers, old generation
Comedy - Adults, teenagers
Romance - Adults, teenagers, old generation
Horror - Adults, teenagers
