15) Why is sound so important in a film?
Sound is important in film because it establishes the tone and atmosphere. It also helps give the audience hints about the plot, characters or identity of the genre. George Lukas argued that 50% of the movie is sound. He said that without the sound, you have half the product of the film. Also, because of the developments in sound, there is something called the 3 dimensional visceral experience which makes the movie more enjoyable to hear as well as watch. I did an experiment where I watched a title sequence opening with and without sound. When I watched it without sound, the experience was more boring and I was not sure what the movie genre was and it was confusing because I was unsure what was exactly happening. The second time I watched it with sound, I understood what genre it was and it was more interesting. It was also more exciting and I wanted to watch it more and find out what the movie was about. Sound adds a dynamic element to the film because it makes the audience curious about what the movie is about.
